Medieval fortress Dunottar castle was home to one of the most powerful families in Scotland. The castle lies isolated off the coast near Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire where over centuries it has protected the likes of William Wallace, Mary Queen of Scots and countless tourists. The site was occupied since the Picts (this land's original settlers) from 5000BC-700AD (Dun is gaelic word for hill fort). In the 5th century the site was used as a Christian church by St Ninian who brought Christianity to the Picts. The castle is owned by Historic Scotland, a charity in the wider heritage sector who own 2.5% of Scottish land.
