The spherical Dounreay fast reactor, the first of five built on the site of the UK Atomic Energy Authority and Ministry of defence located in the extreme north of Sutherland far from large populations. Radiation leaks on the Atlantic shoreline have added fuel to the debate on nuclear energy and the presence of nuclear submarines whose engines are designed and manufactured beside Dounreay. Althought decommissioned Scotland's wilderness, while admired for its natural beauty is also used for the testing of weapons and its seas for the training of nuclear submarines far from major population centres in London. This is a key a point of contention between Westminster and Holyrood. The Scottish Government are pledging to remove trident and use the money to fund social welfare programmes in an independent nation.
