• Lord Pearson of Rannoch on his estate at Rannoch moor. This modest shooting estate of 20,000ha lies in the heart of Scotland near Glen Coe and on the popular north road to Fort William. The tradition of sports shooting is modern arising in the mid 19th century in a glen nearby This is a cleared landscape that once sustained whole communities and historically would have been a forest. The wild archetype of Scottish wilderness is in fact a man-made landscape. Lord Pearson is in favour of reducing deer numbers to allow forest regeneration but also to increase vigour of hunting stock. Neighbouring estates differ on their views, some believe more deer are better and others wanted stronger culls to allow natural forest regeneration.
